Hikes and other outdoor activities listed below represent some of the activities published in our newsletter, Trail Markings. If you are interested in hiking, and/or other volunteer opportunities, you are encouraged to join GVTA. If you join, you receive the complete listing of hikes and other outdoor activities and more. A membership application form is available for download via the Membership web page. We welcome new members so please join us and help to maintain the Grand Valley Trail, a community resource. Annual General Meeting May 8, 2012 of the GVTA

Support the GVTA by attending the AGM on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Waterloo Region Museum, 10 Huron Road, Kitchener [location by Google Maps].

 

HikerSunday, May 6, 2012 – Bruce Trail, Niagara, Ball's Falls. Level 2/3: Moderate ~ 11.9 km
Leaders: Greg Certified Hiker Leader and Jeanette Certified Hiker Leader. BT Map 4, Ed. 26. Depart at 9:30 a.m. from The Centre for Conservation parking lot near km 56.2. The entrance to this parking lot is at approx. lat/long = 43.133261,-79.38655. Day use fee in 2011 was $5.75 (seniors $4.25). Today's relatively short walk takes us through wooded areas, amongst dolostone boulders and along the escarpment with views of the vineyards below before reaching Ball's Falls. Hiking boots are a must and trekking poles are recommended. No dogs and no dropouts. Directions from the Queen Elizabeth Way/Niagara (east): Take exit 57 toward Victoria Avenue/Vineland/County Road 24, right onto Marina Blvd, take the 1st left onto Victoria Ave (signs for County Road 24 S/Victoria Avenue S/Vineland/North Service Road) for about 5.8 km, left onto 6 Ave/Regional Road 75 for about 0.4 km, right into C. WaterfallThursday, May 17, 2012 Spencer Gorge, Two Waterfalls & Lookout. Level 2: Moderate ~ 7 km
CameraLeader: Jamie Certified Hiker Leader. Departing 10:00 a.m. from the Spencer Gorge Wilderness Area/Tews Falls parking lot off Harvest Road (Bruce Trail Map 8; lat/long ~ 43.281791,-79.979766); do not confuse this with the Webster's Falls parking lot. The 2011 entrance fee was $8/vehicle. Explore part of the Spencer Creek Watershed near Dundas. Experience the Niagara Escarpment as we do a loop hike in this Y-shaped gorge as the waters from Valens & Beverly Swamp rush along Spencer Creek. Take pictures of Webster’s and Tews Falls & experience stunning views from Dundas Peak. We might see walking ferns, chinquapin oak & sassafras. Be prepared for hilly & some rocky terrain. Hiking boots are a must & trekking poles are highly recommended. Bring lunch, water, bug repellent & camera. No dogs & no smoking. HikerFriday to Monday, May 18-21, 2012 – Victoria Day Weekend in the Lower Bruce Peninsula
Leaders: Greg Certified Hiker Leader and Jeanette Certified Hiker Leader. We will enjoy the trails of the lower Bruce Peninsula. Wherever possible we will use side trails to form loops.The views and spring flowers are as good as the Bruce Trail gets! Our hikes will be 15 km or less. Our accommodation and meals are provided by a comfortable lodge at Red Bay [Wildwood Lodge]. Group size is limited to 25 and has been full the past few years. New to hiking? We will help you. HikerSunday, May 27, 2012 – Bruce Trail, Mount Nemo. Level 2/3: Moderate ~ 15.3 km
Leaders: Greg Certified Hiker Leader and Jeanette Certified Hiker Leader. Depart at 9:00 a.m. from km 82.1 [approx. lat/long = 43.387907,-79.853454] BT Map 10, ed 26. This Bruce Trail walk is part of the Iroquoia section & takes us to the top of the Niagara Escarpment at Mount Nemo, a shore feature, formed 450 million years ago by a warm tropical sea and since etched by glacial and fluvial episodes. Mount Nemo provides some spectacular lookouts varying from 30 m in the north to 10 m high at the south. Directions: From Hwy 401 take exit 312, go south through Campbellville on Reg. Rd 1/Guelph Line (Main St in Campbellville) for about 16.6 km to where the trail meets Guelph Line. The hike includes road walking before and after Mt. Nemo.
