Hikes and other outdoor activities listed below represent some of the activities published in our newsletter, Trail Markings. If you are interested in hiking, and/or other volunteer opportunities, you are encouraged to join GVTA. If you join, you receive the complete listing of hikes and other outdoor activities and more. Saturday, July 17, 2010 – Elora Cataract Trailway, Belwood Lake C.A. & Grand Valley Trail.
Level 2: Moderate ~ 17 km

Meet at 9:00 a.m. at Lion's Community Centre corner of Queen and George Streets, Belwood (Lion's Community Park, 37 Queen Street, Belwood. This address works with MapQuest | Google Maps). Take Wellington Rd 18 to Fergus and go north to Garafraxa Street. Turn right and follow Garafraxa, which becomes Wellington Rd 19 east of town, to Belwood and turn right on Queen St. The Community centre is at the end of the street with parking along Queen and George Streets. A full loop hike around Lake Belwood during peak wildflower season. Starting from the hamlet of Belwood, we follow the Elora Cataract Trailway to Belwood CA and the Shand Dam, where we stop for lunch. Here there are picturesque views of the lake and the Grand River. After lunch we follow the C.A. trail to 3rd Line and then follow a pretty section of the GVT through woodlots and cottage roads to Belwood. Options for pie and ice cream or other refreshments in Belwood afterwards.***For people wanting to drop out at Shand Dam, please be aware that there is a charge for parking at Belwood C.A, and advanced planning for the shuttle is required. If you are planning on ending the hike at Shand Dam please contact Alicja or Andrew ahead of time so that we can plan the car shuttle with an idea of how many cars will be needed at that point.
Saturday, July 17, 2010 – Huron Natural Area. Level 1: Moderate ~ 5 km

. This lovely natural area is Kitchener's hidden gem. In different areas the trails are paved, gravel or dirt and there are several hills. Meet for a 9:00 a.m. start at the picnic tables near the parking lot, Huron Natural Area, 801 Trillium Drive, Kitchener. Hiking boots not required, but be prepared for muddy areas on the trail. Be prepared for bugs. Leashed dogs welcome.
Saturday, July 17, 2010 – Bruce Trail - Hilton Falls Loop Hike Level 3: Fast ~ 23 km

. Meet for a 9:00 am start in the south parking of Hilton Falls Conservation Area. Parking fee of 6$ per car OR bring BT membership for free parking - see note at end of this hike description. This is a loop hike following Main Bruce Trail from km 1.2 Toronto section to the north until at km 7.7 where we turn left on the Hilton Falls Side Trail and go back to the meeting place through conservation area for 15.4 km. Hiking boots are strongly recommended. No dogs and no dropouts. Bring lots of water. Directions: From HW 401 take exit 312 for Guelph Line, drive north on Guelph Line and then turn right onto Campbellville Rd/Reg. Rd. 9 for 3 km. The Hilton Falls C.A entrance is on the north side of the road (B.T. map 11, ed. 25). NOTE: The BTC has indicated that free parking for BTC members is in the process of being revoked by Conservation Halton. Free parking may not apply for the day of this hike. Sunday, July 18, 2010 – Grand Valley Trail-Paris Loop Hike. Level 2: Leisurely ~ 12 km

. Meet 9:30 a.m on the east side of the Grand River at the end of Powerline road, Brantford. From HWY 24 go West on Powerline Road to the end of the road where there is a parking lot. We will be doing a loop hike including the S.C Johnson Rail Trail and the Grand Valley Trail. We will enjoy some great river views. Bring lunch, water, bug spray and suntan lotion.
Saturday, July 24, 2010 – Dyers Bay, Devil’s Monument Loop Hike. Level 3: Fast/Strenuous ~ 22 km

. Depart 9.00 am. Parking is in the community parking lot in the Hamlet of Dyers Bay at Km 116.8. Leader can store any pot luck food on his property at Dyers Bay prior to the walk.
This is a series of loop hikes in Dyers Bay area that will also include a stop over (max 40 mins) at the famous Lark Whistle Gardens a lush organic garden filled with perennials, herbs and edibles. (There is a small entry fee into the Garden’s) This hike involves 5 kms of country road walking. Bring your swim suits if you are brave to have a fast dip in the cooler waters of Georgian Bay). No drop outs and sturdy hiking boots recommended. Pot luck ay Dyers Bay after the hike. From Wiarton, travel north on Hwy 6 for about 40 mins. Passing by Miller Lake, look for the sign of Dyers Bay Road. Turning right on Dyers Bay, drive to a T-intersection. Turn right and keep on the black-top road to the parking lot ½ way down a steep hill on left.
Sunday, July 25, 2010 – Hope Bay, Bruce Peninsula Loop Hike. Level 3: Fast/Strenuous ~ 18 km

. Depart 9.30 am. Parking at the intersection of Scenic Caves Road and Rush Cove Road km 62.6. We will walk towards Rush Cove and Cape Dundas as well as visiting the glacial potholes before returning to our cars. You will be amazed by the escarpments’ beauty. I have various names for my favourite look-outs and caves, so you have to join me for my explanations. At the end of the hike we will visit Hope Bay for its spectacular views, ice cream and chocolate milk. From Wiarton, travel north on Hwy 6. When you pass Spirit Rock Conservation Area, look for Hwy 9 Colpoy’s Bay. Travel north on Hwy 9 passing Hope Bay Road to Scenic Caves Road. Turn right to km 62.6.
Saturday, July 31, 2010 – Bruce Trail, Sydenham Hike 4 of 12. Level 2: Moderate ~ 14.4 km

johnstone_cathy@hotmail.com. Depart 9 am, km 58.9, map 30 Sideroad 24 and 2nd Concession S [approximately 44.624488,-80.765721]. We will have many spectacular views of Georgian Bay. One section of trail has intense colonies of ferns, including rare varieties such as Hart's Tongue and Walking Fern.
