Saturday, July 9, 2011 – Guelph Trails, Celebrate Nunavut Day. Level 2, Moderate, ~ 14 km

. Meet before 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the Golden Griddle Family Restaurant in the Woodlawn Centre, 20 Woodlawn Road
East, Guelph [43.566456,-80.275705]. After a car shuttle we walk through the Marden Tract, pick up trails through the Ignatius Jesuit Centre, continuing along the north side of Marden Creek to the Speed River eventually arriving on the Guelph Dam. Weather permitting we will have lunch at the dam before returning on a slightly different path to Woodlawn Centre. Sturdy hiking boots recommended. Bring water & lunch. No dogs & no smoking. From Kitchener take Hwy 7 into Guelph & at the Hanlon Expressway keep straight on Hwy 6/Woodlawn Road to the intersection of Woodlawn Road & Woolwich (cemetery on your right). Go straight through the intersection & the Woodlawn Centre will be on the left (Canadian Tire, Staples, etc.). Google Maps.

Sunday, July 10, 2011 – Thames Valley Trail Hike 5 of 6. Level 2: Moderate ~ 19 km

. Meet at 10:00 in the hamlet of Plover Mills to the north of the Fanshawe Conservation Area. There is off-road parking on the north and south sides of Plover Mills Road (County Road # 16). (Reference Map # 5 of the Thames Valley Trail Guidebook). Today we hike through the Fanshawe Park Conservation Area along the shores of the man-made Fanshawe Lake. The trail is relatively even with some undulations but nothing too intimidating. Be aware that the Upper Thames Valley Conservation Authority may require each hiker who is not a member of the Thames Valley Hiking Club to purchase a day use pass to walk through the conservation area. After we exit the conservation area, we will follow a gravel road for most of the distance to Plover Mills. There will be a drop-out at km 12.
Saturday, July 16, 2011 – GVT: Glen Morris to Five Maples. Level 2: Moderate ~ 16 km

Meet before 9:00 a.m. in the "Five Maples Rest Area" parking lot (lat/long = 43.352447,-80.415229) near km 13.6 (Map 9) - Google Maps. Today we walk northward crossing six east-west roads from Glen Morris in Brant County back to "Five Maples" in Waterloo Region. We experience the moraines (glacial hills) of the woodlots known as Sudden & Dryden Tracts with some great countryside views. Sturdy hiking boots are required & trekking poles are recommended. Bring lots of water, lunch, bug spray & sunscreen. No dogs & no smoking. Directions: Follow Roseville Rd (Waterloo Rd 46) to where it passes over Hwy 401. Immediately east of Hwy 401 turn on Whistle Bare Rd (north) following it for 100 m to the parking spot on the left.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 – The Grand River Champion of Champions Pow-Wow in Brantford. Level 1: Moderate ~ 5 km
Leader: Walter. Pre event hikes are being organized by the Carolinian Crest Club of the GVTA. Pow-Wow website. Meet at the Six Nations Visitor’s Centre located at the corner of Pauline Johnson Rd. and Brant Rd 54 (Map 5) at 9:30. There is ample parking at the visitors centre and a number of other locations in the immediate vicinity. We will spot cars at Painter Road (km 14.7, Map 6). The well marked trail is gently hilly and crosses a several bridges and fence stiles. The Six Nations Champion of Champions celebration is across the street from the visitors centre and the rest of the day will be spent enjoying the colorful regalia, dancing and traditional foods. Bring lawn chairs. Those wishing a longer walk are welcome to add a few more km by starting at points further away, although most of these extensions will be along roads. Be warned that a large section of trail South of Pauline Johnson Rd, can be muddy and prone to flooding over during spells of wet weather.
Sunday, July 24, 2011 – Thames Valley Trail Hike 6 of 6 Level 2: Moderate ~ 20 km

Meet at 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot on the west side of Water Street South (City Road 25) in St. Mary’s just south of the tennis courts and across from the St Mary’s Cement Company quarry. (Reference Map # 6 of the Thames Valley Trail Guidebook). To finish the trail into St. Mary’s where we arrive at the northern terminus of the Thames Valley Trail and the southern terminus of the Avon Trail, we must hike over and along some deeply wooded ridges and through some steep eroded stream valleys. In places the trail is quite steep and affords a magnificent view of the river valley. There will be a drop out at km 8 and 17. Those who finish the entire series of hikes will be eligible to purchase a beautiful official Thames Valley end-to-end badge.
