Hikes and other outdoor activities listed below represent some of the activities published in our newsletter, Trail Markings. If you are interested in hiking, and/or other volunteer opportunities, you are encouraged to join GVTA. If you join, you receive the complete listing of hikes and other outdoor activities and more. End to end hike seriesMonday, August, 1, 2011 – Peninsula Section Hike 6 of 12. Level 2/3: Moderate ~ 17.6 km
Leader: Cathy Certified Hiker Leader johnstone_cathy@hotmail.com. Departing at 9:00 a.m. from the Richardson Side Trail accessed from Forty Hills Road, km 87.7 map 38. HikerSaturday, August 6, 2011 – Floradale Dam Loop Hike. Level 1: Moderate ~ 7 km
Leader: Janice Certified Hiker Leader. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at Bonnie Lou's Café beside the river in Floradale (on Floradale Rd., NW of Elmira). Breakfast at Bonnie Lou's followed by the hike. Join us for Saturday breakfast in Floradale (8:30a.m.) and then our summer hike around the dam. The sugar shack will be quiet this time but birds will be singing on the water and in the wetlands as we walk through some coniferous forests on easy trail. We will also cross the Woolwich Dam on our loop hike and be finished by noon. Pre-registration necessary – see newsletter for contact info.

HikerSaturday, August 13, 2011 – Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington. Level 1: Leisurely ~ Short distance
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED (posted 2011AUG11) Leader: Jane Certified Hiker Leader. Meet at 9:15 a.m. Meet at Fairview mall, Kitchener, behind Wal-Mart in the corner of the parking lot to the right to carpool. The RBG is at 680 Plains road West, Burlington. We will spend the day exploring the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington enjoying the roses, medicinal plant garden, annual flowers, herbs, perennial border gardens, hostas, ornamental grasses, heritage plants, chrysanthemums and much more. There will be a short hike also for those interested to be arranged. Bring lunch or enjoy lunch in the Café. $13.00 if less than 15 people ($10 for seniors), $11 if 15 or more people. HikerSaturday, August 13, 2011 – Bruce Trail, Sydenham. Level 2/3. 3 km/h. Hilly, rocky terrain. 9.6 km
Leaders: Jamie Certified Hiker Leader, Greg & Jeanette Certified Hiker Leader. BT Map 32, ed. 26. Meet before 12:00 p.m. at Inglis Falls C.A. parking lot near km 93.4 [approx. lat/long = 44.525695,-80.935443]. The 2010 parking fee was $3.00/vehicle. Today's walk takes us from Pottawatomi C.A./Jones Falls along the edge of Springmount Forest/West Rocks to Inglis Falls. Hiking boots are a must and trekking poles are recommended. No dogs and no dropouts. Directions: At Rockford (Hwys 6/10, south of Owen Sound) go west on Grey Rd 18, right on Inglis Falls Rd, right at Falls Rd at 23780 Inglis Falls Rd into C.A. HikerSunday, August 14, 2011 – Bruce Trail, Sydenham. Level 2/3. 3 km/h. Hilly, rocky terrain. 17.0 km
Leaders: Jamie Certified Hiker Leader, Greg & Jeanette Certified Hiker Leader. BT Map 31, ed. 26. Meet before 9:00 a.m. at km 64.7 [approx. lat/long = 44.592161,-80.793833] Today we walk a relatively new section of trail in a north easterly direction from east of Owen Sound to Irish Block Rd that takes us cross country and along some roads. Hiking boots are a must and trekking poles are recommended. No dogs and no dropouts. Directions: From Owen Sound follow Hwy 26 East, left (north) on Irish Block Rd for about 0.45 km & look for roadside parking where trail crosses the road. HikerMonday, August 15, 2011 – Bruce Trail, Sydenham. Level 2/3. 3 km/h. Hilly, rocky terrain. 11.7 km
Leaders: Jamie Certified Hiker Leader, Greg & Jeanette Certified Hiker Leader. BT Map 32, ed. 26. Meet before 9:00 a.m. at Inglis Falls C.A. parking lot near km 93.4 [approx. lat/long = 44.525695,-80.935443]. The 2010 parking fee was $3.00/vehicle. Initially we walk in a westerly direction to the glacial, re-entrant valley of Owen Sound, check out Centennial Tower (built on top of the 1887ish Brown's Lime Works) & then head south along a spectacular section of the escarpment (East Rocks), Harrison Park, over the Sydenham River to Inglis Falls. Hiking boots are a must and trekking poles are recommended. No dogs and no dropouts. Directions: At Rockford (Hwys 6/10, south of Owen Sound) go west on Grey Rd 18, right on Inglis Falls Rd, right at Falls Rd at 23780 Inglis Falls Rd into C.A. Hiker Saturday, August 20, 2011 – Fort to Fort Trail Hike 1 of 2. Level 3: Moderate ~ 28 km
Leader: Arthur Certified Hiker Leader. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Kingsbridge Park, 7870 Niagara Parkway south of the “Falls”, near the village of Chippawa ($10.00 parking fee). This Trail is Niagara River Recreation Trail, mostly on a paved surface, better to use supportive soft rubber shoes to stop blisters. The Niagara River is very scenic. Today we will pass-by Goat Island, Three Sisters Island, Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls. Bring lots of water, snacks, lunch and sun lotion. You can purchase a Fort to Fort end-to-end Badge if you do the hike in two days (cost only $8.00).

HikerSunday, August 21, 2011 – Fort to Fort Trail Hike 2 of 2. Level 3: Moderate ~ 28 km
Leader: Arthur Certified Hiker Leader. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Old Fort Erie, 350 Lakeshore Rd (close to the Peace Bridge) Fort Erie. There is free parking on Lakeshore Rd directly across from the front gate. Spectacular views of the Niagara River and parks continue.

HikerTuesday, August 23, 2011 – Lake Superior Coastal Trail. Level 2: Moderate ~ 15 km
Leader: Pauline Certified Hiker Leader. Meet at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot at the end of Boat Launch Road off of Hwy 17. Car shuffle to parking lot at Katherine Cove. Park fees are $14/day/car. For optional car pooling from Twilight Resort located on Hwy 17 North, Montreal River Harbour meet at 9:00 a.m. Although due to the car shuffle we will need half empty cars for this hike. Hike from Katherine Cove to Sinclair Cove, approximately 15 km, along the shore line with rocky terrain. Hiking boots a must and poles recommended. Bring lunch, water and snacks. HikerWednesday, August 24, 2011 – Lake Superior Coastal Trail. Level 2: Moderate ~ 10 km
Leader: Pauline Certified Hiker Leader. Meet at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot at the end of Boat Launch Road off of Hwy 17. Park fees are $14/day/car. For optional car pooling from Twilight Resort located on Hwy 17 North, Montreal River Harbour meet at 9:00 a.m. Hike short distance to Agawa Rock Pictograph to explore. Then return to cars and drive north on Hwy 17 to Orphan Lake Trail parking lot. Loop hike on Orphan Lake Trail for approximately 8 km. Then trip to Wawa to enjoy the sights and an optional group dinner at area restaurant. Hiking boots a must and poles recommended. Bring lunch, water and snacks. HikerThursday, August 25, 2011 – Lake Superior Coastal Trail. Level 3: Moderate ~ 12 km
Leader: Pauline Certified Hiker Leader. Meet at 9:30 a.m. in parking lot at end of Gargantua Road. This road is off Hwy 17 and is a dirt road that will take approximately 45 minutes to drive. Park fees are $14/day/car. For optional car pooling from Twilight Resort located on Hwy 17 North, Montreal River Harbour meet at 8:00 a.m. We will hike south for approximately 6 km from Gargantua Road to Rhyolite Cove. This section of the trail is physically demanding with high cliffs and rugged terrain. The footpath makes dramatic changes in elevation. Then we will retrace our steps for an approximately 12 km hike. The trail is along the coast with great vistas. Hiking boots a must and poles recommended. Bring lunch, water and snacks.
