Hikes and other outdoor activities listed below represent some of the activities published in our newsletter, Trail Markings. If you are interested in hiking, and/or other volunteer opportunities, you are encouraged to join GVTA. If you join, you receive the complete listing of hikes and other outdoor activities and more. Thursday, April 8, 2010 – "Lions Lake Trail", Floradale. Level 1: Moderate, 7 km

. Meet before 10:00 a.m. on Ruggles St (1st St on Google Maps) beside Bonnie Lou's Café, 2238 Floradale Rd/Rd 19 [approximate latitude / longitude = 43.634587 -80.58108 | Google Maps]. There are parking spots past the mail boxes & opposite the old fire hall. We will do a loop around the Woolwich Reservoir created by the damming of Canagagigue Creek. No dogs or smoking. Bring water, snack & bug & sun protection. Optional lunch afterwards at the café.
Saturday, April 10, 2010 – Lynn Valley Trail. Level 2: Moderate ~ 22 km

. We will meet at 8:15 a.m. and carpool from the Canada trust bank in the Williamsberg shopping plaza on Fischer Hallman Road, at the end of Westmount Road in Kitchener. If you wish to meet in Simcoe please call hike leader for directions or see the end of this writeup. We will join the Thames Valley Hike club for their annual Lynn Valley Trail hike from Simcoe to Port Dover. We will have a fish and chip lunch (approximately 1 hour) in Port Dover, before hiking back to Simcoe. There will be an option to hike only one way, have lunch and explore Port Dover before heading home. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring water and snacks and lunch if you wish to join the group for lunch. Lynn Valley Trail website. [Meeting place in Simcoe is Memorial Park parking lot. A suggested route from Kitchener is to take Hwy 24 south to Simcoe, continue south on Hwy 24/Northfolk St through Simcoe. Continue on Norfolk St., past Victoria Street to Woodhouse St. There is a small sign for Memorial Park, turn left, east, one block then right, south, into Memorial Park (Google Maps 42.828890,-80.299667 - park is near the end of Woodhouse St & Owen St)].
Saturday, April 17, 2010 – Grand Valley Trail Loop Hike. Level 2: Moderate ~ 14.5 km
Leader: Jim Couch. Meet at 9:00 a.m in the parking lot on the east side of the Grand River on Powerline Road west of Hwy 24 in Brantlford (GVT map 8, km 50.9). We will do a loop hike along the scenic Grand river before the leaves are out. From the lookouts along our trail, the blue heron colony nesting site (rookery) will be visable across the river. Bring water, lunch, sunscreen. Hiking boots necessary. No dogs please.

Meet at 9:30 a.m at the plaza on the intersection of Wellington Street (Hwy 124) & Imperial Road fronting Sun Magic. Relatively easy walk along the Speed and Eramosa rivers – see some of the nice parts of Guelph, where you can walk every day.
Thursday, April 22, 2010 – Schneider’s Woods. Level 2: Moderate ~ 9 km

Meeting time: 10:00 a.m. Follow Erb St. west of Fischer-Hallman and just past the landfill site, you will see WILMOT-TOWNLINE on the right. Take this gravel road north to the second road and turn left on Carmel-Koch Rd.--for less than 2 km to the meeting point. (This is the Musselman's Woods Entrance.) We will walk through this lovely property of forest and farmland on both sides of Carmel-Koch Road. There are some hills and rough spots. We should see some early spring flowers. Bring lunch, water and snacks.
Saturday, April 24, 2010 – Bruce Trail, Beaver Valley. Level 2/3. 3 km/h. Hilly, rocky terrain, 18.7 km

. BT Maps 24/25. Meet before 9:00 am for a 9:00 am departure at km 33.2 on the 9th Sideroad east of Duncan (Map 25, ed. 25). Our hike starts east of Ravena and takes us through the north portion of the Kolapore Uplands, Metcalfe Rock and through the Duncan Crevice Caves Nature Reserve. Hiking boots are a must and trekking poles are recommended. No dogs and no dropouts. Directions from Eugenia – Follow Grey Rd 13 north for about 4.7 km, veer right on Artemesia-Euphrasia Townline, left (north) at 3rd Line, east on Sideroad 10D to Duncan & continue east on Sideroad 9. Meeting place location: approximate latitude/longitude = 44.423509 -80.468584 (Note: Same meeting place as April 25th.)
Saturday, April 24, 2010 – Kissing Bridge Trailway E2E Hike 1 of 2. Level 3: Moderate ~ 25 km

Meet at 9:00 a.m. where the Kissing Bridge Trailway crosses Waterloo Region Road #21 (Arthur Street) north of Waterloo Road #86 in the town of Elmira. We will pass through the rural Mennonite farmland to the south and west of the Town of Elmira. We will commence hiking in the hamlet of Millbank in the County of Perth and pass through small rural communities such as Linwood and Wallenstein. Depending on the level of water in the streams, we may have some challenging crossings on the trailway where there are no bridges remaining.

Sunday, April 25, 2010 – Kissing Bridge Trailway E2E Hike 2 of 2. Level 3: Moderate ~ 20 km

Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the same place as Hike #1, where the Kissing Bridge Trailway crosses Waterloo Region Road #21 (Arthur Street) north of Waterloo Road #86 in the town of Elmira. We will pass from the City of Guelph through rolling farmland and past the nineteenth century covered bridge at West Montrose. This “kissing bridge” crosses the Grand River and was covered to protect the bridge from rain and snow and prying eyes (which indirectly allowed kissing). Hikers will be allowed to re-enact a crossing if they so desire.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010 – Carolinian Crest Club Meeting of the Grand Valley Trails Association
7:00 p.m. at Enterprise Brant offices, 330 West Street, Unit 10, Brantford, Ontario (near Galileo Blvd) > Google Maps. The Carolinian Crest is the name of the Grand Valley Trail section within Brant County. Agenda available here (PDF).
Thursday, April 29, 2010 – Homer Watson Loop. Level 1. Moderate. ~ 6 km

. Meet before 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot behind Tim Hortons at Pioneer Park Plaza, 123 Pioneer Dr, Kitchener [approximate latitude / longitude = 43.395277 -80.432392 | Google Maps]. We will walk to and through part of Homer Watson Park to the confluence of Schneider Creek and the Grand River (Lower Doon) and back to the plaza along the creek as its winds its way through Upper Doon (Tow Town). No dogs or smoking. Optional lunch at Pioneer Park Plaza after.
